Whether it's your first tailgate or your fiftieth, dressing right for the parking lot is half the battle. Here's the complete game-day outfit, layer by layer, for every kind of weather.

Start with the pants — they set the whole outfit

Everything builds up from the bottoms. A pair of team-color Zubaz pants does two jobs at once: it's the most comfortable thing you can wear for a 10-hour day, and it announces your team from across the lot. Pick your team's zebra stripe (the classic), or one of the newer prints — Camo, Ombre, Confetti, Post — if you want to stand out from the other fans in your section.

Layer 1: the base

For any game below about 50°F, start with a thermal base layer top and bottom. Zubaz pants are cut roomy specifically so they layer over thermals without binding. Above 60°F, skip it.

Layer 2: the top

  • Warm days: a team tee — short sleeve in September, long sleeve in October.
  • Cool days: a team hoodie or crewneck. Matching the print to your pants is the classic look; mixing patterns in the same team colors is the bolder one.
  • Cold days: hoodie over the base layer, and see the next section.

Layer 3: the shell (cold games only)

For real winter kickoffs, team outerwear and bib overalls go over everything. Bibs are the underrated tailgate move — full coverage, no gap at the waist when you bend for the cooler, and they look incredible in a team print.

Head, hands, feet

A team beanie or hat, gloves you can still open a can with, and team socks (in the zebra print, naturally). Warm feet are the difference between leaving at halftime and staying for overtime.
